Shen Weigeng was born in Yixing, Jiangsu province in 1965. He has developed a penchant for painting ever since childhood. It is by chance that he learned the fact that the soldering iron can draw lines in different density on a wooden board. He later did further research that enhanced his understanding of “soldering painting”, which also facilitated his determination to learn and push forward this artifact.
As a folk artist in Yixing, Shen has been dedicated to the soldering painting for 25 years. Different from the traditional brush, paint and rice paper, the mere combination of a soldering iron and a plywood can also convey the artistic conception of the traditional Chinese painting including the landscape painting and the bird-and-flower painting. In the meantime, the traditional painting skills are applied to the soldering painting. Plus the temperature control, an artistic piece of works is therefore composed.
Looking at the cultural perspective of the soldering painting, one of China’s intangible cultural heritages, Shen has been advocating the artistic form to paint with the soldering iron as opposed to brush painting. He is also a firm believer of ethnic character, independent thinking and innovative creation. His aesthetic pursuit has always been combining national spirit and painting skills with a sincere wish that soldering painting will be well inherited.
